Los Angeles County Firemen's Benefit & Welfare Association
The Los Angeles County Firemen's Benefit & Welfare Association is a non-profit organization founded and administered by its members. These members include both active and retired employees of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
THE BENEFIT FUND
The main purpose of this fund is to provide social and recreational activities for members such as Straight Streams magazine, the L.A. County Firefighter's Picnic, subsidy for a portion of retirees admission to qualified retirement functions and, when available, discounted admission to a number of local and national entertainment venues.
THE WELFARE FUND
The purpose of this fund is to provide various home care and special medical equipment for members and their immediate dependents when such equipment is not, or is no longer covered by insurance. (NOTE: Your insurance carrier should be the primary source for this equipment.) Although there is no charge for the use of the equipment, members are reminded that our medical equipment is shared and in most cases is not brand new. The equipment is, however, maintained and delivered by a vendor that thoroughly cleans and repairs all equipment before it is delivered. It may show some signs of wear or use, but is completely functional and clean. Knowing this up front is important. If a member requests equipment and then refuses to accept it when delivered because they are unhappy with its appearance, the member will be required to pay the transportation charges for the equipment.
This fund may also assist individuals who qualify for personal hardship, by providing financial aid. Applications for aid are reviewed by the Board of Directors at their monthly meeting, and decided on a case-by-case basis.
MEMBERSHIP IN THE B & W ASSOCIATION
The operating costs of the association are supported by a voluntary monthly payroll deduction from the active membership. All permanent employees of the Los Angeles County Fire Department are eligible for membership. The cost is $9.76 per month and is tax deductible. Retirees of the department who were members throughout their active service shall continue as members but will no longer be required to pay dues. For enrollment assistance contact your Director
DUTIES OF BATTALION DIRECTORS
Each month it is your responsibility to inform the Secretary of any changes of assignment, mailing address or telephone number for the Director or the Alternate Director.
ONLY the Director or Alternate Director shall have the authority to order medical/hospital equipment through the Equipment Manager or Equipment Coordinator at Pacoima. Note: Your name must be on the current Officers & Directors Roster, to order equipment. In the event of a change of Director/Alternate, inventory your items to include the telephone calling card, discount cards, miscellaneous forms and briefcase issued by the B&W Association. Notify an Officer of the change and to whom the items have been transferred. Directors who represent their Battalion can assist financially, in an extreme hardship case, up to $100 without prior Board approval. Notify an Officer immediately of your action.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance at monthly meetings by the Director or Alternate is extremely important in order to maintain a good channel of communication between the general membership and the Board. If the Director is unable to attend, make every effort to have your Alternate attend.
